The Magic of Floral Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil is a hidden gem in the world of aromatherapy. With its sweet, floral, and slightly herbaceous scent, it has been cherished for centuries for its therapeutic properties. Known for its ability to balance emotions, support skin health, and uplift the spirit, this versatile essential oil has become a favourite among aromatherapists and wellness enthusiasts alike…

History and Folklore
The use of Geranium dates back to ancient times, with its roots deeply embedded in traditional medicine. Though native to South Africa, various species have been cultivated worldwide, particularly in Egypt, China, and Europe. The ancient Egyptians were among the first to recognise the powerful properties of Geranium oil. They used it in skincare formulations, believing it to promote youthful, glowing skin. Egyptian women often incorporated Geranium-infused oils into their beauty regimens, and the oil was sometimes used in religious ceremonies.
In the Victorian era, plants were commonly placed on windowsills to ward off evil spirits and promote positive energy in the home. The leaves were also used in herbal remedies for infections, wounds, and digestive issues.
Traditional herbalists have long used Geranium for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, often applying crushed leaves to cuts and bruises. In folk medicine, Geranium was believed to protect against negative energies and attract good fortune.

The Art of Extraction
Geranium essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the leaves and stems of the Pelargonium graveolens plant. This process ensures that the delicate aromatic compounds are preserved while separating the essential oil from the plant material.

  1. Harvesting – The leaves and stems are harvested at peak bloom to maximize oil content and fragrance.

  2. Steaming – The plant material is placed in a distillation chamber where steam is passed through it, causing the essential oil to be released.

  3. Condensation – The steam carrying the essential oil is cooled and condensed back into liquid form.

  4. Separation – The essential oil naturally separates from the water (hydrosol), which is also collected for use in skincare and aromatherapy.

Geranium hydrosol, a by-product of this process, is often used in facial toners and room sprays due to its gentle, floral scent and skin-balancing properties.

Botanical Notes

Geranium essential oil is famed for its beautiful and complex fragrance, which has a well-balanced floral and green aroma. It is often compared to rose oil, though it has a slightly fresher and more herbaceous undertone.

  • Top Notes: Fresh, green, citrusy nuances.

  • Middle Notes: Sweet, rosy, floral heart with a hint of spice.

  • Base Notes: Soft, herbaceous, earthy undertones.

Due to its similarity to rose essential oil, Geranium is frequently used as a more affordable alternative in perfumes and skincare formulations. The uplifting and harmonising scent makes it a great addition to body care products and home fragrances.

We love Geranium so much that it actually features in four of our blends, taking the lead in Geranium, Lavender and Bergamot which is inspired by warm summer days in a British country garden (can’t wait for those!) where our Geranium, Lime and Black Pepper blend is a great scent to revive and perk you up. We love using our new Luxe Heart Melts for a burst of fragrance around the home.
