Discovering the Magic of Neroli

In the world of aromatherapy and skincare, few ingredients can boast the rich history and myriad of benefits that Neroli oil offers. Extracted from the fragrant blossoms of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium amara, Neroli oil has been a secret of beauty and wellness enthusiasts for centuries. Its beautiful fragrance and therapeutic properties make it a must-have in any holistic skincare regime, especially during the summer months.

A bit of history
The history of Neroli oil dates back to the 17th century, with its roots deeply embedded in the Mediterranean region. The oil is named after Anna Maria de La Tremoille, Princess of Nerola, Italy, who popularised its use by perfuming her gloves and bathwater with the fragrant essence. The oil quickly gained popularity among European nobility for its intoxicating scent and therapeutic properties.
Historically, Neroli oil was not only prized for its fragrance but also for its medicinal benefits. Ancient Egyptians used the oil as a healing elixir, while in traditional Persian medicine, it was a remedy for anxiety and digestive issues. Today, Neroli oil continues to be revered for its multifaceted uses, making it a staple in both aromatherapy and skincare.

Neroli oil is extracted from the delicate white blossoms of the bitter orange tree, which grows abundantly in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Italy and France, especially the Grasse region, well known for its perfume heritage. The extraction process is meticulous and labour-intensive, with the petals being handpicked in the early morning hours when their fragrance is at its peak and before the fragrance evaporates in the sun. They lay out muslin sheets on the ground to collect the petals, gathered at dawn, during late spring, ensuring that the highest quality oil is obtained. The most common method of extraction is steam distillation, which preserves the delicate compounds responsible for Neroli’s distinctive aroma and therapeutic properties. The pure Neroli oil is then collected and stored in dark glass bottles to protect it from light and maintain its potency.

Best use
Neroli oil also offers holistic benefits for the mind, body, and skin. A powerhouse in skincare, it is known for its regenerative properties, it is said to help boost cell regeneration, promoting smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Neroli also has a balancing effect on the skin, making it suitable for both dry and oily skin types.
The uplifting and calming scent of Neroli oil makes it an effective remedy for stress and anxiety. It can help to alleviate symptoms, promoting a sense of calm, relaxation and enhanced emotional mood. Neroli oil also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help in treating minor skin irritations and would remove infections. It is also used in aromatherapy massage to provide relief from menstrual cramps and digestive discomfort.
