Chamomile Essential Oil: Ancient Herb, Modern Healing

Few herbs bridge the gap between ancient tradition and modern wellness as Chamomile. Known for its soothing aroma and healing properties, Chamomile essential oil has earned a revered place in the world of aromatherapy. For centuries, this gentle yet powerful oil has been used to calm the mind, ease discomfort, and nurture the skin.

In our fast-paced world, Chamomile essential oil is like a pause button in a bottle. Grounded in ancient wisdom and supported by modern science, it offers a holistic path to healing, gently guiding the body and mind toward balance…

History and Folklore
Chamomile’s journey began in ancient Egypt, where it was revered as a sacred gift from the gods. The Egyptians dedicated the herb to the sun god Ra, recognising its powerful healing properties. Chamomile was also used in embalming oils and skincare preparations, believed to promote youth and vitality.

In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates - often referred to as the father of medicine - recommended Chamomile for fevers and female ailments. The name “Chamomile” itself comes from the Greek chamaimēlon, meaning ‘ground apple,’ due to its apple-like scent.

Throughout the Middle Ages in Europe, Chamomile featured heavily in herbal remedies. It was planted in gardens and strewn over floors during festivals and holy days to create a calming atmosphere. In British folklore, it was seen as a herb of humility and healing. It was commonly associated with protection and purification, with dried flowers added to sachets and charms to bring peace and good fortune.
Even in the Victorian era, chamomile tea and infusions remained household staples, with the oil valued for its calming effect on both the mind and body.

The Art of Extraction

There are two primary varieties of chamomile used in aromatherapy:

  • Roman Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis)

  • German Chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita, Matricaria)

While both offer similar benefits, Roman Chamomile is typically preferred in essential oil form for its sweeter scent and gentle action, making it ideal for sensitive skin and emotional balance.

Chamomile essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the plant using steam distillation. This method is gentle and preserves the delicate esters and compounds that give the oil its signature soothing qualities.

  • Roman Chamomile Oil is light yellow with a sweet, fruity, apple-like aroma.

  • German Chamomile Oil has a blue tinge due to its high content of chamazulene, a potent anti-inflammatory compound.

Thanks to its sedative qualities, Chamomile essential oil is also a natural ally for insomnia and restless nights. It helps quiet a racing mind and prepares the body for deep, restful sleep.
