Clary Sage: Mystic Marvel

Clary Sage essential oil is one of the most beloved oils in the aromatherapy world, valued for its soothing, balancing, and mood-enhancing properties. Today, it remains one of the cornerstone oils in aromatherapy practice. Its versatility means it can be used for emotional support, skincare, relaxation, and even as a perfume ingredient.
With its rich history, folklore, and enduring therapeutic qualities, coupled with its herbaceous, slightly floral, and musky aroma, it has a long history that blends medicine, mysticism, and everyday use…

History & Folklore
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb that belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae. Native to the Mediterranean Basin, parts of North Africa, and Central Asia, it has been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal, cosmetic, and aromatic properties.
The name ‘clary’ comes from the Latin word clarus, meaning ‘clear.’ This is a nod to its historic use as a remedy for eye conditions. In medieval Europe, the seeds were steeped in water and placed in the eyes to clear away debris or soothe irritation, earning it the nickname ‘clear eye’..

In the 17th century, it was also used to flavour wines and beers, sometimes as a substitute for hops. It was known for producing a slightly intoxicating effect, which only added to its reputation as a mystical and mood-altering herb.
In traditional herbalism, it was seen as a plant of vision and clarity - not just in the physical sense of eyesight, but also in the spiritual sense of intuition and inner wisdom. Some believed that the herb could open the third eye, enhancing dreams and creative thought. It was sometimes burned as incense in rituals aimed at promoting insight, relaxation, and connection with higher consciousness.
The plant was also considered an aphrodisiac in folklore. Its rich, musky undertone was thought to stimulate passion and romance, and was frequently included in love potions and herbal blends associated with Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

The Art of Extraction

Clary sage essential oil is obtained from the flowering tops and leaves of the plant through steam distillation.

  • Harvesting – The plant is usually harvested during its peak flowering season in summer. At this point, the concentration of its active compounds, particularly linalyl acetate and linalool, is at its highest.

  • Distillation – The plant material is placed in a still, where steam passes through and extracts the volatile aromatic compounds. The vapour is then condensed back into liquid form, separating into essential oil and hydrosol (floral water).

  • Essential Oil – The pale yellow to colourless oil carries a complex, layered fragrance that is earthy, nutty, floral, and slightly fruity.

Best Use
Clary Sage is well known in aromatherapy for its calming and mood-enhancing properties. Its aroma can help ease anxiety, reduce tension, and promote feelings of wellbeing. It is often used in diffusers or added to massage oils to support relaxation.
Thanks to its calming effect on the nervous system, clary sage is often used as a natural sleep aid. Diffusing the oil before bedtime can help quiet a busy mind and encourage restful sleep.

Blended into massage oils, clary sage may help ease muscular tension and cramps. It has warming, soothing qualities that make it a favourite for relaxation massages.

Botanical Notes
The fragrance of Clary Sage is both grounding and uplifting, making it a versatile oil for blending.

  • Top notes: Bright, slightly fruity and herbal with hints of hay or tea.

  • Middle notes: Warm, nutty, floral tones reminiscent of lavender, yet earthier and less sweet.

  • Base notes: Musky, balsamic undertones that give it a sensual depth.

Due to its rich profile, it pairs beautifully with many other oils. We blend it with Bergamot and Patchouli, evoking the warmth of sunlight on a crisp morning. As the scent evolves, the Clary Sage lends a soft, herbal touch that is both soothing and aromatic, grounding the brightness with its calming green tones. Try it in our reed diffuser for a beautifully autumn-scented home.
